My Ultimate Guide to Icon of the Seas: How to Make the Most of Your Cruise

This summer, I had the opportunity to sail aboard Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, and I must say, it was probably the best cruise experience I've had since my trip to Alaska. From the incredible food to the seemingly endless activities, this ship exceeded my expectations. In this blog, I want to share my experiences, along with some tips and tricks to help you maximize your fun aboard one of the world's most impressive cruise ships.

Before You Board: Save Your Money in Miami

Our journey began with a flight to Miami, where we would board the cruise. Now, here's my first piece of advice: if you're only staying in Miami for one night, don't waste your money on an expensive beachfront hotel.

Think about it. You're about to spend the next several days surrounded by beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tropical destinations. Why spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy hotel when you could save that money for something more exciting, like drinks, excursions, or other onboard experiences?

First Day: Food, Food, and More Food

Once you board the ship and finish unpacking, my recommendation is simple: head straight to the main buffet.

Trust me, the first-day lunch was something else. During my trip, the kitchen went all out, offering everything from heaps of lobster tails to exotic dishes like fish tartare and countless other delicacies. It genuinely felt like a feast fit for royalty.

My advice? Savor every bite because, at least in my experience, the grandeur of that first lunch was hard to match throughout the rest of the cruise.

After satisfying your appetite, I highly recommend getting yourself a lanyard to hold your room key. It might sound like a minor detail, but having your SeaPass card conveniently accessible makes life much easier, especially when entering and exiting the ship for excursions.

Another essential is downloading the Royal Caribbean app. This will become your best friend throughout the trip, helping you keep track of daily activities, entertainment schedules, dining options, and everything else happening aboard the ship.

And if you're under 18, I cannot recommend the teen club enough. Seriously, go check it out! It's a fantastic place to meet people your age, make new friends, and find a group to hang out with during your vacation. Some of the coolest people I met on the cruise were through these activities.

The Activities You Absolutely Cannot Miss

Now, here's where things get interesting. Icon of the Seas has an almost ungodly number of activities to choose from, and listing every single one would probably turn this blog into a novel.

Instead, I'm going to highlight the experiences I personally enjoyed the most and believe everyone should try at least once.

1. Mini Golf: The Ultimate Friendship Test

You might be wondering why I'm recommending mini golf when there's an entire water park aboard the ship. But hear me out.

Mini golf is one of those activities that becomes infinitely more entertaining when you're playing with friends or family. Between making fun of each other's questionable golfing skills and watching someone completely miss an easy shot, it's guaranteed to create some hilarious memories.

And here's a suggestion: try playing around midnight.

There's something special about playing mini golf late at night, surrounded by the ocean breeze and the atmosphere of a massive cruise ship. It's an entirely different experience.

2. Take a Walk Around the Ship

Sometimes, the best activities are the simplest ones.

Icon of the Seas has a dedicated running and walking track, and I highly recommend exploring it, even if you're not particularly interested in exercising.

The views of the endless ocean are beautiful, and there's usually a refreshing breeze that makes walking surprisingly enjoyable.

Whether you're walking alone, catching up with friends, or simply taking a break from all the excitement, it's one of the most relaxing experiences aboard the ship.

3. Category 6 Water Park: An Absolute Must

Forget the regular pools and hot tubs for a moment. While they're great for relaxing, they can get ridiculously crowded.

I'm talking about the actual water slides.

The water park aboard Icon of the Seas is easily one of its biggest highlights. Each slide offers something unique, with impressive designs, thrilling drops, and plenty of opportunities to scream your lungs out.

Honestly, I would even compare the experience to Schlitterbahn, one of my favorite water parks.

If you're someone who enjoys adrenaline-pumping activities, this is one attraction you absolutely cannot skip.

4. Rock Climbing: Are You Up for the Challenge?

Why try rock climbing on a cruise ship?

My answer: Why not?

The climbing wall is surprisingly challenging, and although it might look manageable from the ground, you'll quickly realize that reaching the top is easier said than done.

In fact, I don't think I saw a single person successfully make it to the top during my experience!

Whether you're an experienced climber or a complete beginner, it's a fun activity to challenge yourself and compete with friends. Just make sure you meet the activity's safety requirements.

5. The Gym: Balance Out All That Amazing Food

Now, I know what you're thinking.

Who goes to the gym while they're on vacation?

Well, hear me out.

You're going to be eating a lot aboard this ship. And when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. Between the enormous buffets, specialty restaurants, desserts, and snacks available throughout the day, it's almost impossible not to indulge.

Luckily, Icon of the Seas has a respectable fitness center equipped with weights, cardio machines, and plenty of exercise equipment.

Even if you're not planning on following your usual workout routine, spending a little time at the gym is a great way to stay active and feel energized throughout your vacation.

Besides, working out while surrounded by breathtaking ocean views is an experience in itself.

Excursions: Choose Your Own Adventure

Of course, no Caribbean cruise would be complete without visiting the incredible destinations along the way.

However, because every itinerary and port offers different experiences, I won't recommend specific excursions. Instead, my biggest suggestion is to research your options before the cruise and choose activities based on what you genuinely enjoy.

If you're a thrill-seeker like me, consider activities such as ziplining, hiking, or exploring the local landscapes.

On the other hand, if your idea of a perfect vacation involves relaxing under the sun, head to the beach or enjoy one of the pool and recreation areas available at certain ports.

Just remember that excursions can vary significantly in price, duration, and intensity, so doing a little research beforehand can save you money and help you make the most of your time.

Final Thoughts: Make Every Moment Count

And there you have it! My personal guide to making the most of your experience aboard Icon of the Seas.

While I've only scratched the surface of everything this enormous ship has to offer, these were some of the activities and experiences that made my vacation so memorable.

My biggest advice is to explore as much as possible, try activities you've never done before, and, most importantly, meet new people. Some of the best memories from a cruise aren't necessarily from the expensive excursions or extravagant attractions, but from the spontaneous moments you share with friends and family.

So, whether you're sailing for the first time or you're already a seasoned cruiser, I hope these tips help you create an unforgettable vacation.

That's all I've got for y'all. Have an amazing cruise, enjoy every moment, and happy sailing!
